3 Dental Myths That Are Costing Pet Owners Thousands
(And no, their breath is not supposed to smell like a hot garbage!)
Pet dental disease is one of the most common and most misunderstood health issues in dogs and cats.
And unfortunately, a few stubborn myths are quietly turning small problems into very large invoices. Let’s clear them up.
Myth #1: “Bad breath is normal for pets”
Reality: If your pet’s breath could knock out a houseplant, something’s going on. Bacteria can quietly accumulate beneath the gumline, causing inflammation that progresses silently. Infection often spreads without obvious signs, so by the time pets show discomfort, stop eating, or have loose teeth, the dental disease is usually already advanced.
Cost impact: Early dental care vs advanced extractions can mean the difference between hundreds vs thousands.
Myth #2: “Dental chews, water additives, and toys replace cleanings”
Reality: Dental chews are helpful… but they are not magic. Think of them like flossing without ever seeing a dentist. Nice effort, but not a full plan. Some dental products can be helpful as adjuncts, but they do have limitations: they don’t remove tartar, treat infected roots, or reverse periodontal disease. When choosing products, look for VOHC approval, but remember they are supports, not miracle cures.
Cost impact: Relying on products alone often delays necessary treatment, leading to more extractions and anesthesia time later.
Myth #3: “If my pet is eating fine, their mouth can’t hurt”
Reality: Pets will eat through dental pain that would have us crying into our mashed potatoes. Many pets adjust quietly to dental discomfort. They may swallow food without chewing, gradually adapt as pain worsens, or chew only on one side of their mouth. Just because a pet is eating doesn’t mean they’re pain free.
Cost impact: Waiting for appetite changes means disease has already progressed and treatment is more invasive and expensive.
The Bigger Picture
Dental disease doesn’t just politely stay in the mouth. Untreated oral infection can impact the heart, kidneys and just overall impact their quality of life. Preventive dental care isn’t overkill and in my opinion, it’s cheaper than regret. Dental myths don’t just cost money, they cost comfort. Early exams, realistic expectations of dental products, and timely cleanings are the most cost effective dental plan there is.
